
Michael David AptedĀ CMGĀ (10 February 1941 ā 7 January 2021) was an English television and film director and producer.
Apted began working in television and directed theĀ UpĀ documentary series from 1970 to 2019. He later directedĀ Coal Miner's DaughterĀ (1980), which was nominated for sevenĀ Academy Awards, includingĀ Best Picture. His subsequent work includedĀ Gorillas in the MistĀ (1988),Ā NellĀ (1994), theĀ James BondĀ filmĀ The World Is Not Enough (1999), andĀ EnigmaĀ (2001). His filmĀ Amazing GraceĀ (2006) premiered at theĀ Toronto International Film FestivalĀ that year.
On 29 June 2003, he was elected president of theĀ Directors Guild of America, a position he served until 2009.Ā He was appointed Companion of theĀ Order of St Michael and St GeorgeĀ (CMG) in theĀ 2008 Birthday Honours.
